Limbo, Steel, lacquer, jesmonite, 120 x 125 x 16 cm

Claire Baily’s interest in design is evident as there is a strong Art Deco resonance in the work. They both share rich colours, bold geometric shapes and (often) lavish ornamentation. Art Deco combines traditional craft motifs with machine age imagery and materials. Baily’s work celebrates much of the Art Deco movement, embracing technology to produce finely crafted components. However with Baily’s work, the parts are much more than ornaments. They are not popular motifs either; they are essential elements of Baily’s particular vocabulary.
